FAQS

What sandpaper and abrasives are best for woodworking?

For woodworking, choose quality sanding discs, sandpaper rolls, sanding blocks or hand sanding abrasives that suit your timber, sander and finish. Ceramic and mesh abrasives are popular for timber because they cut efficiently, resist clogging and help create a smoother surface before applying oil, stain, lacquer, epoxy or other timber finishes. Hammer Roo stocks sanding discs, rolls, backing pads, interface pads, pad savers and sanding accessories for woodworking projects.

What grit sandpaper should I use for timber?

The right sandpaper grit depends on the stage of your project. Coarse grits are used for shaping, flattening or removing marks. Medium grits are used for general sanding and surface preparation. Fine grits are used before applying timber finishes or between coats where required. For most woodworking projects, work through the grits gradually rather than jumping from very coarse to very fine, as this helps remove scratches and gives a better final result.

What is the difference between sanding discs, sandpaper rolls and sanding blocks?

Sanding discs are designed for orbital and random orbital sanders, making them a good choice for faster sanding on timber slabs, panels, furniture and joinery. Sandpaper rolls are useful for cutting to size and hand sanding. Sanding blocks help keep pressure even when sanding edges, corners and smaller areas by hand. Hammer Roo’s abrasives collection includes sanding discs, sandpaper rolls, sanding blocks, backing pads, interface pads and pad savers.

Do I need a pad saver or interface pad for my sander?

A pad saver helps protect the hook and loop backing pad on your sander, especially when changing sanding discs often. An interface pad adds a softer layer between the sander and abrasive, which can help when sanding curves, profiles, edges and more delicate surfaces. These accessories can extend the life of your sanding setup and help improve sanding control on woodworking projects.

What size sanding discs do I need?

Choose sanding discs that match the size and hole pattern of your sander. Common sizes include 125mm/5” and 150mm/6”, both of which are available in Hammer Roo’s sandpaper and abrasives range. Matching the disc size and dust extraction holes correctly helps the abrasive sit properly, reduces dust build-up and gives a cleaner sanding result.
