FAQS

What is a timber slab?

A timber slab is a thick, wide board cut from a full log that retains the natural outer edge of the tree. Slabs are used to make river tables, dining tables, benchtops, and other statement furniture pieces where the natural character of the timber is central to the design. Each slab is unique in its grain pattern, figure, colour, and live edge shape, no two are identical.

What timber species are available at Hammer Roo?

Hammer Roo holds over 800 timber slabs in stock at its Loganholme store, covering a range of Australian and imported hardwood species. Stock levels and species availability change as slabs sell and new stock arrives, so visiting the store in person or contacting Hammer Roo directly is the best way to find a specific species. The online selection shows a portion of what is available in-store.

Can I buy a timber slab online from Hammer Roo?

Yes, Hammer Roo offers timber slabs for purchase online, though visiting the Loganholme store is recommended if you want to inspect and select your slab in person, since every slab is different. Postage is available, but the cost varies considerably depending on the slab's size, weight, and your delivery location. Contact Hammer Roo for a postage quote before ordering a specific slab.

What is the difference between air dried and kiln dried timber slabs?

Air dried timber has been dried slowly in the open air over an extended period, typically one to two years per 25mm of thickness, which is a gentler process that some woodworkers prefer for long-term stability. Kiln dried timber has been dried in a controlled oven (kiln) to reach a consistent moisture content, usually 6 to 12 percent, more quickly. Kiln dried slabs are ready to use sooner and are more dimensionally stable, while air dried slabs may need further drying time before use in indoor furniture.

What is a live edge timber slab?

A live edge slab retains the natural outer edge of the log, the waney edge where the bark was, shaped exactly as the tree grew. Rather than being squared off to a straight edge, the board follows the original contour of the tree, giving each piece an organic, irregular edge profile. Live edge slabs are highly sought after for dining tables, river tables, and feature shelving where the natural form of the timber is a central design element.
